Authorities stated they could not take off the eyes without harming the artwork.

A teenager from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after reportedly defacing a sizable art piece of a mythical creature by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the September incident, the local council said that surveillance video showed a person placing artificial eyes on the sculpture, which locals have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and told the judge she was ill, according to news outlets, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

Sculpture after eye removal
The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were removed.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the local government would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.

When the artwork was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and appearance.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.

Official name vs. local name
The sculpture is its formal title but residents called the piece the ‘Blue Blob’.
