For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.
Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the live show The First Shadow.
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
