Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
