Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Departs Following Shift Towards Fried Chicken.

The head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit maximum pizza demand while diversifying the chain into poultry items has been ousted after disagreements with its directors.

Leadership Transition

The former CEO is exiting after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who was with Domino's for over 20 years, had aimed to shift Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, remarking earlier this month there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He noted poultry was the quickest rising food category in the globe.

Board Tensions

It is understood that there was friction between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.

Recent Product Introduction

In September, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused offering – which Rennie described as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.

While the company is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views fried chicken as complementary to its core pizza business.

Board Statement

Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on finding the right chief executive to lead the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, Domino's, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it attributed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the shutting of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Health Efforts

Adapting to market shifts towards better nutrition, the company has introduced light products, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 calories as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 calories.

Acting Management

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and previously worked for the gaming group William Hill. It is understood that she prefers not to occupy the CEO position on a full-time basis.

She said: “We have a several active expansion and efficiency programs that we will be dedicated to carrying out at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised further work on the organization's logistics network and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term chief financial officer until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. Until then, Richard Snow is acting financial officer.
