Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
