Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent

He has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would increase the party's House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This move has made him a target from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened eliminating the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy stated, following a recent tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team retorted in a last month's release countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A this month's survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an typical level of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The notion that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
