Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
A man and a woman got detained at the location and another man who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to hospital.
The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.
The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister confirmed.
Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being activated”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
