American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.
"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.
After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.
But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.
More than three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.
"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.
"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.
Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the shutdown started.
The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.
Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.
In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.
"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.
