Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell hit an superb final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
