A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed across the area.

The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, together with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the city.
